With 12 MX pesos in his pocket and aiming to reach the United States, Don Raul and Doña Lupe traveled from Mexico City to Tijuana. When they arrived, an attendant told them they were short on a replacement for the next bus. A passer-by overheard their conversation and approached them with a ticket.
King Taco 28 Tacos And Football
Raúl grew up in La Liga de Futbol while living in Mexico City. When they moved to California, they drove to MacArthur Park to watch the locals play. With no food vendors around, they packed tacos and grilled Carne Asada’s while enjoying the game, a Mexican custom. Raul was inspired by many who were reminded of how difficult it is to find authentic Mexico City-style food in the city.
First Taco Truck in The US
Despite concerns from those around them, they decide to buy his 1950s ice cream truck and convert it into the first mobile taco station. On a summer night in 1974, Raul and Lupe parked their taco truck next to a bar in East Los Angeles, where they became famous. Writer and journalist Gustavo Arellano says it was Raul who invented the modern taco truck.

Six months later, Raul and Lupe purchased a small store in Cypress Park. Initially, the location served primarily as a central kitchen to enable restaurant businesses to open and operate properly. Today, he is one of the few surviving original restaurants and has become a staple in LA.
King Taco 2
One of King Taco’s most popular spots, King Taco #2, is located at Ford and 3rd Streets. King Taco’s original location (Cypress Park) opened in 1975 but didn’t immediately become a restaurant. The original served as the central kitchen and helped launch the second location. As such, many people often confuse which of these two is the original.
At the time, the place served as an order-to-go restaurant. The customer went to the window and the cashier took the order by hand and passed it to the chef. Customers enjoyed their tacos on the hood of their car, an early habit. Production was carried out in a bodega (warehouse) attached to the restaurant. This is also where Raul had his first office in his space. The office still exists today in his honor and houses many items and memorabilia from King Taco’s early days.
Expansion
Raul admired motorsport and respected craftsmanship. His family often took weekend trips to racetracks in Northern California. In the mid-’90s, King Taco expanded its business by placing food trucks at the Long Beach Grand Prix. Their first year was so successful that they decided to continue participating in the annual event.
Today
Hardworking, passionate and caring are just a few words that describe Raul. He deeply appreciated his hardworking employees and provided them with growth and opportunities. This is the work culture that King Taco continues today.
The Mexican fast-food hotspot has since expanded to 22 hotspots in Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. Today, King Taco offers a wide variety of authentic Mexican cuisine, recognized by celebrity food critics.
