Snak King
Snak King is a snack food manufacturer founded in 1978 and headquartered in Industry, California. The Snak King manufactures private-label and house-label potato chips, tortilla chips, nuts, popcorn, and other snack foods. The company is one of the largest snack food manufacturers in the United States, employs approximately 950 people, and operates over 600,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.
In December 2011, Snak King launched her C.J. Marie and Charles Vitner founded her C.J., a Chicago-based manufacturer, and distributor of snack foods. The Vitner Company is a collection of retail stores consisting of his five stores selling candy, magazines, cigarettes, and ice cream on Chicago’s South Side in 1926. During the Great Depression, when sales were sluggish, Charles looked for other ways to keep the business afloat and invested in his popcorn machine.

Charles then began handing out potato chips and pretzels in taverns and shops. By the late 1930s, Charles owned six of his trucks sold exclusively to the hospitality industry. He also provided everything a taverna needed, from soups to glassware. James Vitner joined his father’s business in the late 1940s and through his foresight established a sales office in Chicago. The 1970s saw another major expansion of the Vitner company when Jim’s son Bill joined the family business and the company moved to a larger facility. By this time, however, the company had evolved into a distribution company.
History
In 1977, it was decided to move to produce own-brand snack foods, and the company acquired its potato chip maker, Blue Star Foods.
Now that Vitner’s name appears on the packaging, the company has started to thrive. A 100,000-square-foot facility was purchased to meet the demand for the Vitner Snack Line. Within a decade, Vitners had established 70 direct store delivery routes and six wholesale distribution routes serving the Chicago real estate market. In the 1990s, management noticed that the inland Loves Park facility, which had previously expanded to full capacity, was shrinking rapidly.
Locations throughout the Midwest were considered and a 55-acre location in Freeport, Illinois was ultimately selected. When the factory opened in 1992, it was the most modern snack food manufacturing facility in the country with all the latest equipment. The Loves Park factory only made potato chips and popcorn, while the Freeport factory has added extruded products, corn chips, corn pops, and tortilla chips to its Vitner brand snack food line. Vitner’s products are now sold in approximately 20 states through an extensive distribution network.
