What is Lychee Fruit?

Above all, you must get to know what is lychee. I know it is quite uncommon so might be you or a few of you don’t know about the feature of lychee. A tree in the soapberry family (Sapindaceous) known as the lychee, also spelled litchi or lichi.

It grows for its edible fruit. Since ancient times, the Cantonese have loved the fruit lychee, which is native to Southeast Asia. Although it can also be canned or dried, fruit is typically eaten fresh. The dried pulp has an acidic and extremely sweet flavor, while the fresh pulp has an aromatic and musky flavor.

Most of Southeast Asia’s local populations value lychee, which also grows commercially in China and India. It was first introduced to the West when it arrived in Jamaica in 1775. According to legend, the first lychee fruits in Florida, where the tree has attained commercial significance, ripened in 1916.  The tree grows in cultivation to a lesser extent in Hawaii, South Africa, and the Mediterranean.

The sweet, slightly acidic, and floral lychee is aromatic. Upon biting, you’ll experience a juicy flavor explosion with a strawberry or pear-like flavor and a hint of citrus. Others liken the floral flavor to roses.

Let’s explore Lychee Iced Tea

Now you will get to know here about the delicious lychee iced tea. Might you have tried peach iced tea which is also a tempting drink and mint iced tea a good beverage for summer but now the new drink is going to add to your list which surely makes your summer super cool?

It is a simple and delectable fruit tea that is based on the old-fashioned Chinese lychee tea and is excellent for cooling off on hot summer days. Traditional lychee tea is a fragrant, age-old Chinese tea made by combining tea leaves with fragrant lychee fruits that are roasted or smoked.

If you can locate it, you can brew a cup of sweet, fragrant tea with this lychee-flavored tea, let it cool completely, and then serve it over ice. Cannot get it? Not to worry! Using lychee fruits, plain tea, and the traditional iced fruit tea recipe method, you can create your lychee tea from scratch. How? Lychees cooked until syrupy in a little water with a sweetener. Then, simply pour the lychee syrup into the cold tea and stir until combined.

As already mentioned, depending on what you can find, you make this iced tea with fresh or canned lychees. When lychees are in season, Asian food markets should carry them; otherwise, canned lychees are easier to find online or at a well-stocked supermarket. If not, you can switch lychees for related fruits like longans or rambutans.

They aren’t as sweet as lychees, but you can compensate for that by adding more sweetener to the iced tea. We advise using green tea for the base of the tea. Since it is milder and more delicate, it won’t overpower the lychees’ mild floral flavor.

There are three ways you can make your delicious lychee iced tea according to your availability.

Health Benefits of Lychee

Defends Against Free Radical Damage

Vitamin C and other phenolic substances known as flavonoids are abundant in litchi. These shield cells from the harm caused by free radicals, pollutants, and toxic chemicals, which cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. When the body is exposed to radiation, tobacco, or smoke, as well as during the breakdown of food, free radicals are created in the body. Lychees’ antioxidant ability successfully fights off toxins in the body.

Strengthens Immune Mechanisms

Due to its vitamin C content, litchi increases resistance to both seasonal infections and long-term illnesses. White blood cell production increased and helped in function by vitamin C. Because vitamin C is an antioxidant, it reduces oxidative harm and improves smooth operation. The immune system is effectively strengthened by vitamin C to ward off colds.

Stroke Risk Is Lower

The lychee’s tiny amounts of sodium and cholesterol reduce the risk of stroke and other conditions like inflammation, oxidative stress, atherosclerosis, cardiac health, blood pressure, and endothelial health. A stroke or heart attack is caused by plaque buildup in the body and can be prevented with vitamin C.

Increases the Good HDL Cholesterol

Lychees are a good source of niacin, or vitamin B3, which controls how the body makes cholesterol. Niacin increases blood levels of the beneficial HDL cholesterol while lowering levels of the harmful triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.

Enhanced Metabolism

Litchis act as a catalyst for enzymes in biochemical processes, accelerating the assimilation of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in food when consumed as part of a regular diet. In turn, this encourages a healthy appetite and metabolism and aids in maintaining an ideal body weight.

Prevent Constipation

Dietary fiber from lychee helps the digestive system move food through the system and gives stools more bulk, which is beneficial for people with constipation or irregular bowel movements. It promotes a healthy weight and lowers the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Cure For Muscle Cramps

Potassium and water are both present in adequate amounts in litchi fruits. It increases muscle strength and lessens cramping in the muscles, which is frequently brought on by low potassium, sodium, and hydration levels.

Heals Liver Injury Numerous illnesses brought on by excessive alcohol consumption, anemia, malnutrition, infection, and hepatotoxic drugs all result in liver damage. Hepatoprotective compounds found in litchi aid in the efficient treatment of liver diseases.

Does Lychee Help In Diabetes?

In addition, to reducing insulin resistance, lychee fruit’s polyphenol oligonol may also help with vascular issues brought on by diabetes

Lychees, also known as litchi fruits, have potent antihyperglycemic properties that help diabetic patients lower their blood sugar levels. They have a low glycemic load value of just 2, which helps the body process sugars from food more gradually and prevents blood glucose levels from rising dangerously high.

In fact, some potent bioactive crystalline alkaloids found in litchi fruits stop starch from turning into sugar, controlling blood sugar levels, especially in diabetic patients. As a result, diabetics can consume litchi fruits in moderation. To reduce the possibility of any negative effects, however, speak with doctors and nutritionists.

It Felt Like a Dangerous Fruit at One Point. Yet why?

Lychees may have recently been mentioned in the news. Beginning in the middle of May, children in India who lived close to lychee orchards started to wake up crying and screaming. In about 40% of cases, they experienced seizures, fell into comas, or even passed away.

Then, in July, the monsoon rains arrived, bringing an end to the outbreak. This occurred every year. Finally, researchers were able to identify the problem: malnourished children were consuming the lychees on an empty stomach.

The starving kids would frequently eat unripe lychees or lychees that had fallen to the ground, which were rich in hypoglycemic, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative. This was confirmed by laboratory tests, which revealed abnormally high levels of hypoglycemia in the urine of the affected kids.

The kids were affected by hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which was already a problem because they hadn’t had dinner, as hypoglycemia prevents the body from producing glucose. Health officials advised the parents to limit the children’s consumption of lychee and to give them an evening meal.

As a result, the incidence of the mysterious illness sharply decreased. The most important lesson we can learn from Indian kids is to avoid eating unripe lychees when you’re hungry. You shouldn’t be concerned if you consume ripe lychees in moderation and are well-nourished.

Can I use fresh lychees?

I prefer using fresh ingredients whenever possible, but in this case, canned lychee in syrup works better because iced tea calls for lychee-infused syrup. Additionally, it is simpler to locate canned lychee in stores and online, and it is available all year long. The preparation work of peeling and deseeding fresh lychees is also avoided.

How long can I store lychee tea?

In the refrigerator, the iced tea should stay fresh for up to a week.
