Magic City Foods was founded in 1923. Founded in the basement of a grocery store in Birmingham, Alabama by Moses Ryshkoff and Frank Mosher.

According to Funding Universe, “The couple manufactured and sold peanuts, peanut butter cracker sandwiches, and horseradish, but their main product was potato chips (Golden Flakes potato chips). So named because of their appearance. The snacks were all handmade and sold to Birmingham residents who live nearby. In the 1940s, Magic City Foods switched to Golden Flake.

I know achieving the taste of Golden Flake Hot Chips at home isn’t quite possible but still, we can try to get something nearer to that. For that, I am sharing a recipe for all of you to try.


  • 7 unpeeled medium potatoes (about 2 pounds)
  • 2 quarts ice water
  • 5 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons celery salt
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper
  • Oil for deep-fat frying


Slice the potatoes very thinly using a vegetable peeler or metal cheese slicer. Place in a large bowl. Add ice water and salt.

Soak for 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes. Place on kitchen paper and pat dry.

Place garlic powder, celery salt, and pepper in a small bowl. set aside. In a cast iron or another heavy skillet, heat 1-1/2 inches of oil to 375°.

Fry the potatoes in batches, stirring often, until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon. Drain with kitchen paper.

Sprinkle immediately with a spice mixture.
